20 September 2022 – “Hugh Barr – A Man Outstanding in His Field”

Talk by Barrie Barr

 THREE times winner of the World Ploughing Championship 1955, 1956 and 1957

Barrie will give a talk on his father the three times world ploughing champion ploughman, whos’ record of three consecutive World Ploughing Championships has stood unequalled for almost seventy years. Hugh is the last surviving member of the famous Barr Brothers who represented Northern Ireland whilst ploughing in many countries around the world.

Hugh and his brothers were also champion Tug of War competitors having won numerous Northern Ireland championships and were part of the Northern Ireland team to compete at the first European Championship in Crystal Palace 1965 returning with a silver medal on that occasion. Aghadowey would go on to win the gold in the 100 Stone class in 1970, again at Crystal Palace.

The talk will illustrate the achievements of a humble Aghadowey farmer, his family, his interests and outstanding achievements over a lifetime of being quite simply A man outstanding in his Field

Barrie Barr is a 64 year old dairy farmer, married to Jacqueline, they have two children. Barrie is a past pupil of Culcrow Primary school and Coleraine Inst and a former student of Greeenmout Agricultural College.  He is a three times Ulster Young Farmer of the year and past president of the Greenmount Association and spent six months in America on an International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) programme in 1984.

Barrie was President of European IFYE alumni, the International Farm/Four H Youth Exchange Association for four years.

Also a keen sportsman Barrie played rugby in Ballymoney for 20 years and also followed his father’s interest in Tug of War representing Northern Ireland at British, European and world championships on numerous occasions.
